The sea otter has the densest fur of any animal on Earth. It is an adaptation the species needs because, unlike seals and whales, it does not have a thick layer of blubber and instead relies on its dense coat, fluffed up with trapped air, for insulation in cold Pacific water. That same density is exactly what made it a prime target of the maritime fur trade beginning in the eighteenth century, a hunt so thorough across the North Pacific that by the end of the 1800s perhaps fewer than 2,000 animals remained worldwide, effectively wiping the species out across most of its historic range rather than merely reducing its numbers. In 1911, with the species nearing extinction, sea otters received international protection under the North Pacific Fur Seal Convention, which ended the commercial hunt.

Recovery since then has been real but geographically uneven, and understanding why requires separating the otter's two remaining major population groups rather than treating global recovery as a single number. Northern populations along the Aleutian and Alaskan coasts and southern populations along California are recognized today as genetically distinct groups, separated into geographically isolated populations by the fur trade era bottleneck that fragmented the species' historic range. They have followed different trajectories since, with the southern sea otter specifically averaging around 3,000 individuals today, a fraction of its estimated historic abundance, still listed as Endangered under the IUCN Red List.

What makes the recovery story matter beyond the species itself is the otter's keystone role in kelp forest ecosystems: because otters check sea urchin grazing pressure, every otter population that recovers is also, functionally, a kelp forest being protected from collapse into barren rock.
