The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe after the Volga Delta, and the best preserved on the continent, spreading across roughly 4,150 square kilometers of marsh, reed bed and open water where the Danube meets the Black Sea. Geologist Liviu Giosan's research found that roughly 40 percent of the delta was built in just the last thousand years, a rate of growth linked to soil erosion from forest clearing further upstream.
