Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.The study of succession was pioneered at the University of Chicago by Henry Chandler Cowles, who was also one of the founders of ecology as a discipline. In the 1890s Cowles noticed that dunes further from Lake Michigan carried different plants than dunes closer to the water, and he made the conceptual leap that gives succession its name: he determined that the linear arrangement of these plant communities across space also represented a linear progression through time, so that walking inland from the shore was, in effect, walking forward through decades of vegetation change compressed into a single afternoon. The pattern he documented trended toward oak forests in northern Indiana over decades and centuries, and each community along the way created the soil and microclimate conditions its successor needed to take hold. That is the core mechanical insight succession still rests on: a plant community does not simply occupy ground, it actively prepares that ground for whatever replaces it.
